Biography

Matt Hobbs is a songwriter, composer, and musical improviser in Atlanta, GA.  Outside of music Matt is a coffee lover, a collector of Batman Legos, and a Wes Anderson movie fanatic.

Since moving to Georgia in 2010, Matt has found a home in the Atlanta arts community.  Along with being an active singer and songwriter, Matt is also a resident musician at Dad’s Garage Theatre Company – Atlanta’s premier theatre for improv comedy and scripted shows. Along with playing tons of shows as a musical improviser, Matt has also composed songs and worked as musical director for many musicals and scripted shows at the theatre.

During his time at Dad’s Garage, Matt has played alongside comedy legends like Colin Mochrie, Tim Meadows, and Fred Willard on some of Atlanta’s biggest stages like the Fox Theatre and Alliance Theatre Hertz Stage. Matt’s work with Dad’s has merited “Musical Improviser of the Year” for the 2014 and 2015 seasons and “Best Tech Design” for the 2016 season for his work as Musical Director in “Thankskilling The Musical.”

Matt has also performed with indie folk trio Jesse and the Great Perhaps since joining the band in 2012. Matt provided keys and vocals to the high-energy, often comedic, ukulele-based outfit – playing venues like Smith’s Olde Bar, Dad’s Garage Bacon Fest, Drunken Unicorn, and Inman Park Festival.

The College Years and Matt Hobbs Band

Matt moved to Gainesville, Florida, in 2006 to attend the University of Florida.  During his time in Gainesville, he assembled the Matt Hobbs Band. Playing Matt’s first batch of original songs, the piano rock trio kept busy playing venues all around town – from downtown rock clubs to on-campus events.  Matt would later record many Matt Hobbs Band songs shortly after moving to Atlanta in 2011, where he partnered with producer Pat Valley to release his first original solo album titled “Good Enough.”

The Early Years in New Orleans

Matt began playing music early on as a young lad growing up in New Orleans. By the time he was 15, he abandoned traditional piano lessons in favor of learning every Ben Folds and Elton John song by ear. It wasn’t long until Matt began writing his own songs and playing them at the legendary Neutral Ground Coffeehouse on Daneel Street – home of many New Orleans songwriters and storytellers.
